Emergency Action

*If you believe a suicide is in progress, ACT!*

If you're a teen,

tell a trusted adult. If no trusted adult is available, call 911, give the name of the person attempting to hurt themselves, and give the address where the attempt is in progress. Then seek help, comfort, and support for yourself from a trusted adult, as soon as possible.

If you’re a parent, educator, practitioner, or an adult friend,

call 911 (best option) or transport the teen to the nearest emergency room (good option, but with risks). In most cases, calling 911 is a better choice, because ambulances are rolling emergency rooms, and can begin treatment immediately upon arrival--saving valuable time and often saving lives. Also, the teen may not be calm, rational, willing, or safe to be transported, and 911 usually provides law enforcement support as well. After the at-risk teen is secured, notify the teen's parent or guardian. Arrange for or provide comfort, support and supervision for other teens who might have been aware of the attempt. Alert their parents or guardians to the traumatic exposure.
